Museum of Public Transportation

Frankfurt | 2023

The Frankfurt Transport Museum is to be given a new building on the site of the existing transport museum in Frankfurt-Schwanheim on behalf of the Frankfurt Transport Authority.
As part of an invited architectural competition, fs|architekten are developing a three-aisled hall construction on the site of the existing museum on a reduced floor area, which is compensated for by a two-story design of the central aisle. The new museum building will be erected on the base plate of the historic West Hall, thus once again forming an adequate counterpart to the East Hall, which will also be incorporated into the museum's use. The interior of the building is structured by the hall's supporting structure and can be freely used for exhibition architecture.

The existing East Hall will be integrated into the museum concept as a display warehouse and supplemented by a glass extension in front of it. The historic half-timbered structure of the original West Hall, which is currently on display in the museum building, will be used for the supporting structure of the extension.

By using both the West and East halls opposite each other as exhibition space, the approximately 2,000 square meter open space with the track field and the objects exhibited there will be moved to the center of the exhibition and incorporated into it. The track field will remain in its current location and function. The green spaces will be enhanced with planting and furniture, and the former waiting room will be converted into a kiosk with outdoor seating.
