Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

Saint Petersburg, Russia | 2009

Client: Parish of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, Saint-Petersburg

The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, consecrated in 1859, was the cemetery church of the Catholics of St. Petersburg until 1922. It was built by the St. Petersburg architect Nicolas Benois. His son Leon Benois built the Russian chapel on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt in 1899.

During the Soviet era, the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was secularized and put to various secular uses, most recently serving as the workshop of a hydraulics institute. In the process, its appearance was severely compromised both inside and out.

After decades of neglect, the church building has been undergoing restoration since the end of the 1990s. Fs-architekten supported the planning implementation. Based on the original construction drawings, the church spire is now being restored according to its historic silhouette in order to provide a clearly visible sign of the community's revival.
